At the suggestion of the Vice-Chancellor

of Hong Kong University and the Government

of Hong Kong, I have had a talk with

Dr. G.A.C. Herklots, Reader in Biology at the

Hong Kong University, during his recent leave

in England, about the efforts that he is making

to get financial assistance outside Hong Kong

for the development of his own branch of

University work. I need not remind you that

Hong Kong University has at present very

many claims on such local funds as are

available for much needed development$.

It

cannot hope to meet all these claims and there

seems a real danger that this particular claim

will remain unmet unless external help is

obtained.

from the Hong Kong authorities, and from the
